My map paintings straddle a middle ground between cartographic location and representational imagery. Cartographic landforms inhabit my mind wherever I go. Inserting mass media news and current political and historical events into these landforms has helped me generate poignant and sometimes humorous results. The device of map legends offers additional layers of narrative meaning. Highway street patterns, aerodynamic charts and subway grids are just a few of the visual aids that I use. This practice has recently been extended to entirely cover the surface of my paintings. I am interested in the abstraction of boundary lines. All of my map paintings are oil on canvas. I have also created editions of silkscreens. One of them is on permanent display in the Govenors mansion in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
